A mayor for deaf London

Sadiq Khan – the new Mayor of London

My offer for London’s deaf community

I’ve seen first-hand the discrimination faced by some members of the deaf community.

I’m committed to tackling all forms of discrimination and will work hard to remove the barriers faced by the deaf community when accessing services and employment.

If elected as your Mayor, I pledge that all public services under the direct control of the Mayor will implement the BSL charter to empower deaf people and remove discrimination.

This is good to hear!

Both captions and sign language remove discrimination for ALL deaf and hard of hearing people.

Communication support is required for people with a hearing loss in all sorts of daily situations, such as medical appointments, public events and venues, on public transport, in education, at work, leisure facilities … the list goes on – communication affects all aspects of our lives.

We’re hoping Sadiq Khan’s thoughtfulness means real change will happen, and access to London’s facilities will improve. London already provides good communication support in many areas such as subtitled cinema screenings and theatre productions, but there is still a long way to go. Sadiq Khan, we’re watching you!
