121 Captions founder and Managing Director Tina Lannin is the UK’s foremost lip reader.

Having worked with many famous names such as the BBC, Al-Jazeera, and Disney, plus national newspapers and government agencies, Tina has provided training courses and talks at conferences across the Middle East and in the UK on captioning, lip-reading, and communication solutions for deaf people.

As a forensic lip reader, Tina has been hired for such prestigious events as the Royal Wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for Sky News and the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for the BBC.

What is a forensic lip reader?

Lip reading is a very special and unique skill, one which takes years of practice and dedication to learn.

Forensic lip reading takes this talent to another level, one which has serious, real-world implications.

A forensic lip reader is used by officials such as the police, private detective agencies, or insurance companies to collect information or evidence.

And although it’s not 100% accurate, evidence from a forensic lip reader is still admissible in the UK courts.

Examples of forensic lip reading

A forensic lip reader might be asked to interpret what has been said in CCTV footage, often catching people talking about the crime, incriminating themselves and others.

A famous example of this is the Arlene Fraser murder in 1998. The 33-year-old mother of two disappeared and even though her body was never found, her husband was convicted of her murder.

This conviction was due in part to a conversation he had in prison which was recorded by the prosecution. Although there was no sound to the recording, a forensic lip reader was able to create a transcript of what was being said.

But it’s not only criminal cases.

Forensic lip readers can also be used in the media to check on what celebrities and sports stars are saying.

When Chelsea and England footballer John Terry was accused of racially abusing a fellow player, it was proven in court by a lip reader that he was indeed a horrible racist.

    Phillip Lys says:

I take exception to you inferring that lip reading was involved to convict Nat Fraser, in fact Jessica Rees produced a report using CCTV footage from a prison visit which led to the charge of murder being placed against Nat Fraser and Glen Lucas. The lip reading evidence was never produced before the court due to Hector Dick deciding to give evidence against Fraser. The case against Mr Lucas was dropped.
