Learn to Lip Read the Royals

Cast your mind back to any event within the UK which has been covered by television channels and newspapers alike. Many a times, what is reported has not in fact been heard, however these media mediums still manage to ascertain what has been said, and to whom has it been said to, without any audio aids.

Based within London, UK; our job here at 121 Captions as professional lip readers is to decipher the unsaid, or rather to understand what is being said without any audio aids, that to with a 99% accuracy rate, with our lip reading team heading the way of such accuracy. Though, our team consists of lifelong lip readers who have a hearing loss, however whilst dealing with celebrities, it can become a tad bit difficult to ascertain what is being said; what is required here is to gauge the body language and the context within which the conversation is being had in order to clue us in on the conversation.

Such techniques will be of great use to us within this month, with the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle approaching; since we are booked to lip read the British Royal Family Wedding. Our team of lip readers will be watching the wedding unfold via BBC and Sky News and relaying what has been said between the celebrities attending and the Royal Family, to be conveyed to the broadcast TV news teams and newspapers throughout the day on 19th May.

Needless to say, keeping in mind the aforementioned, the importance of learning to lip read has come about in the recent years with such extravagant events needing lip reading services throughout the course of the event. Though understandably this skill is not one which is easily learnt rather it requires a culmination of natural skills and learnt techniques. From making use of signals provided by those speaking, to their facial expressions and on to their body language, each aspect is studied with the utmost carefulness in order to ascertain what is being deciphered is as close to reality as possible.

Now if you’re thinking, could I potentially learn to lip read? You don’t need to worry, in fact even you can learn to lip read, and become a part of deciphering such notable events, through attending registered lip reading classes (registered with ATLA, the Association of Teachers of Lip Reading to Adults)  and utilising approved online resources such as Lip Reading Practice which is run by an ATLA teacher.

After completing the lip reading classes and matching up to the requirements, you can take the BKB test – Bamford-Kowal-Bench test, which is a basic test for lip reading, set to test your ability to understand a person speaking, without an audio aid – just like the team at 121 Captions will be doing on 19th May, whilst covering the British Royal Wedding.
